HOPE FOR BANKS AT LAST AFTER BAD LOANS DECLINE

NMB Bank Plc Chief Executive Officer, Ineke Bussemaker

In Summary

Financial reports of eight major banks published yesterday generally show a significant fall in NPLs during 2017 compared with 2016.

Dar es Salaam. Nonperforming loans (NPLs) have fallen among large commercial banks amid declining profits as the banking industry looks to emerge from two years of operational challenges.

Financial reports of eight major banks published yesterday generally show a significant fall in NPLs during 2017 compared with 2016.

The banking industry went through a rough patch in the last two years, a situation that was largely blamed on a liquidity squeeze which resulted in reduced lending to the private sector.

With tight liquidity in the economy, borrowers failed to honour their obligations, resulting in high NPL levels.

By the end of December 2016, the NPLs to total gross loans ratio had risen to an average of 9.5 per cent from 6.4 per cent in 2015, much higher than the acceptable threshold of five per cent.

MITSUBISHI MOTORS TO RECALL 51,596 OUTLANDER VEHICLES IN CHINA

BEIJING, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Mitsubishi Motors will recall 51,596 vehicles in China due to a potential safety hazard in the rear parking brake, according to China's top quality regulator.

Mitsubishi Motors Sales (China) Co. Ltd. filed the recall with the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

The recall is for imported Outlander vehicles manufactured between Nov. 15, 2012 and Jan. 28, 2016, the administration said in a statement.

Water can get into the brake caliper, causing a shaft to corrode. If that happens, the parking brake may fail to fully engage, causing the vehicle to slide when parked, the statement said.

The recall will start on April 27.

Dealers will check the rear brakes. If shafts are corroded, they will replace the calipers. If not, they will replace the boot that keeps water out.

NMB CLOSES CHALLENGING YEAR WITH TZS 95BILLION UNAUDITED PROFIT AFTER TAX

Dar es Salaam, January 29, 2018 – NMB Bank Plc. (“NMB”) has recorded a TZS 95billion unaudited Profit after Tax (PAT) for the year ending 31 December 2017.

Amidst the challenging business environment observed in the year, NMB was able to grow its total income by 5% from TZS 614billion in 2016 to TZS 647billion in 2017. The bank’s customer business remained strong; for the 5th time in a row, the bank was named the Best Bank in Tanzania and for the first time, the Best Bank Transformation in Africa by the leading global financial markets magazine Euromoney.

NMB has recorded a PAT of TZS 95billion for the year ending 31 December 2017, down from TZS 154billion reported for the same period in 2016. The decrease is attributed to an increase in credit provisions reflecting setbacks faced by our customers.

A high interest rate environment existed earlier in year. This resulted in an 18% increase of interest expense from TZS 102billion recorded in the same period the previous year to TZS 120billion in 2017. Consequently, net interest income grew by 4% from TZS 449 billion recorded the same period in 2016 to TZS 467billion in 2017.

Year on year, revenue from foreign currency dealings grew by 15% from TZS 15billion in 2016 to TZS 18billion in 2017. Other fees and commissions grew by 11% specifically from an increase in transactions in the various distribution channels; total non-interest revenue (NIR) increased by 9% to TZS 180billion.

In the fourth quarter of 2017, customer deposits rose by 9% to TZS 4.2 trillion from TZS 3.9 trillion as at the end of the third quarter. As a result of the prudent approach the bank adopted in growing its loan book, loans and advances grew slightly from TZS 2,786 billion in the previous quarter, to TZS 2,787 billion in the fourth quarter.

KENYA'S NAKUMATT SUPERMARKETS GOES INTO ADMINISTRATION

NAIROBI (Reuters) - A Kenyan court on Monday granted Nakumatt Supermarkets protection from its creditors, allowing what was once Kenya’s biggest retailer to go into voluntary administration.

Nakumatt, which expanded from a mattress shop in a rural town to have branches across Kenya and East Africa, was forced to shut more than a dozen outlets last year as it struggled to repay its suppliers, landlords and other creditors.

The High Court said in its ruling that it approved Nakumatt’s application to appoint Peter Kahi as an administrator. It said he would take up his role soon.

Kahi, who works with a Nairobi consultancy, had experience turning around distressed businesses, Nakumatt said.

He is expected to manage the settling of debts estimated at more than $300 million and would try to revive the business in a slimmed down version with about 20 branches, down from 62 at its peak. When it sought protection in October, the firm had 4,000 staff, but it has closed several outlets since then.

PRESIDENT JOHN MAGUFULI DISMISSES BUTIAMA DED OVER INEPTITUDE

President John Magufuli on Tuesday dismissed Butiama District Executive Director (DED) Solomon Ngiliue over failure to discharge his duties in his district.

The Minister of State in the President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government (RALG), Mr Selemani Jafo, said in a statement that Ngiliue’s sacking follows a recent working tour of the district by the Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa.

During the tour, the premier found out that some officials in various district councils were irresponsible. Mr Jafo directed the Permanent Secretary in his docket to equally take appropriate measures against an accountant who was involved in the misappropriation of the government funds in the district.

“I want all officials under RALG to observe professionalism and public service code of conduct through proper utilisation of public resources for the benefit of the nation and its people,’’ he charged.
