CITI PROFIT SLIDES BY HALF IN Q3

Citibank Tanzania net profit has slumped down by almost half after net interest income went down by a third in this year’s quarter three.

The corporate bank, with a single branch, posted a net profit of 2.74bn/- in Q3 down from 4.90bn/- similar period last year. The profit slump, according to financial statement, was mainly attributed to dropping of net income revenue by a third to 6.61bn/- from 9.63bn/-.

The loan revenue went down after the amount lent out dropped to 176.13bn/- from 195.77bn/-. The bank, despite reducing the amount loaned out, assets grew 11.6 per cent to 659.03bn/-, thanks to increase balances with central bank and investment in government securities.
Citibank boasts one of the lowest nonperforming loans in the country after dropping to 0.1per cent in Q3 from 4.5per cent of Q2. Customer deposits have increased by 12.8 per cent to 476.57bn/- in three months to September from 413.64bn/- at the end of June.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to support the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), but this time paying particular attention to the mid-size companies whose impact on the economy in terms of job creation and industrialization is immense.

Speaking during the Top 100 mid-sized companies awards ceremony on Friday in Dar es salaam, The Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment Hon. Charles Mwijage said the government is committed to creating an environment that will allow the mid-sized companies thrive.

Dar es Salaam: 31st October 2017: First National Bank Tanzania has launched a funeral insurance cover to provide individuals and families the financial support to lessen the cost burden during funerals.

Launching the product, the FNB Head of Retail Banking, Francois Botha said the product has been named “FNB Faraja Plan”, and is underwritten by Metropolitan Insurance Tanzania, one of the leading insurance companies in Africa.

Botha said the word “Faraja” means “Consolation” because it is designed to comfort families dealing with the aftermath of a death of a family member. “Considering that the cost of funerals has gone high over the recent years, failure to cover the cost of funeral could cause further distress to family members. After the death of a loved one, it can be an expensive, painful and frustrating process of having to put together a funeral to say farewell. With the FNB Faraja Plan it’s possible to have the cost of a funeral covered to save your family from having to pay for it.”

AMBITIOUS PLANS FOR MWANZA

PRESIDENT John Magufuli yesterday unveiled plans to transform Mwanza into East Africa’s business hub through expansion and promotion of Mwanza Airport to international standards.

The envisaged expansion works on the lakeside airport aim at attracting international airlines and tourists. Addressing a mammoth public rally here on arrival for a two-day state visit to the rocky city, President Magufuli said the airport will be improved to an international status, making it a gateway of international tourists to tourism attractions like Serengeti National Park without necessarily connecting from the neighbouring countries.

Moshi. Kilimanjaro regional commissioner Anna Mghwira has advised financial institutions in Tanzania to launch new products that rhyme with local market to support industrialisation as touted by the current government.

Speaking during the launch of Barclays Bank Tanzania’s ultra-modern branch in Moshi at the weekend, Ms Mghwira said the lenders should avoid adopting products from other markets which end up failing to satisfy the demand.

VODACOM APPROVES SH26BN IN DIVIDENDS

FBME DEPOSITORS’ REIMBURSEMENT THIS WEEK

DEPOSIT Insurance Board (DIB) will from Wednesday start reimbursing the insured deposits to depositors of the FBME Bank which is under liquidation, the Central Bank has said.

Every bank and every financial institution which is licenced to carry on banking business in the country is required by law to be a member of the DIB.

HALOTEL TZ’S $800M INVESTMENT WINS INTERNATIONAL PRAISE

Dar es Salaam. Organizers of the International Business Awards (Stevie Awards 2017) have named Viettel Tanzania PLC (Trading as Halotel Tanzania) as the “Fastest Growing Enterprise in the Middle East and Africa”, thanks to its $800 million (about Sh1.7 trillion) investment.

Halotel said in a statement yesterday that the company was named as so during an event that was held in Barcelona, Spain on Tuesday this week. Halotel has operated in Tanzania for two years now during which period, it has registered a number of achievements.

Launched in October 2015, Halotel managed to register about one million subscribers in a period of about three months.

BARRICK IN $11M LOSS AFTER SECURING MONEY FOR TANZANIA

The mining giant made a net income of $175 million over the same period last year. Barrick produced 1.243 million ounces of gold in the third quarter, at a cost of sales of $820 per ounce compared to 1.381 million ounces, at a cost of sales of $766 per ounce in the prior-year period.

TRA OFFICER ARRAIGNED OVER 500M/- UNACCOUNTED WEALTH

ASSISTANT Customs Officer with Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) Jennifer Mushi was arraigned yesterday, charged with unlawful accumulation of wealth.

Before Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam, the accused faced two counts related to accumulation of 500m/- wealth against her lawful earning. The prosecution alleged that the accused inappropriately owns properties, including 19 motor vehicles and maintains a life style beyond her income.

INFLATION TO STAY AT 5 PER CENT TARGET: PROF NDULU

BANK of Tanzania (BoT) has said inflation is expected to stay within the national medium-term target of 5 per cent to be supported by lower food prices due to favourable weather conditions, Governor, Prof Benno Ndulu has said.

“In terms of headline inflation, so far in 2017 we have averaged about 5.3 per cent,” he said yesterday during an interview with the Oxford Business Group (OBG), a global research and consultancy company with a presence in over 30 countries, from Africa, the Middle East and Asia to the Americas.
“Recently, there has been a bit of pressure from crop prices, which is a regional phenomenon. We anticipate some pressure from northern Africa, however, we believe that we should stay the course.

The VSOMO application which is an e-learning programme being implemented by Airtel Tanzania in partnership with the Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) has proven to be one of the key solutions towards the country’s drive on industrialization.

This has been said by the VETA-Kipawa ICT Instructor Abdul Mollel during the practical sessions for the students who have enrolled and register for courses offered by VETA through the VSOMO application.

VSOMO application allows students to get vocational training through their mobile phones and they only attend classes during practical sessions.
