ETIHAD AIRWAYS LAUNCHES 48 HOUR CHALLENGE TO PROMOTE ABU DHABI STOPOVERS

Mohammad Al Bulooki, Etihad Airways Executive Vice President Commercial; HE Saif Saeed Ghobash, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA); Peter Baumgartner, Etihad Airways Chief Executive Officer, celebrate the launch of the airline’s Abu Dhabi 48 Hour Challenge at Arabian Travel Market (ATM).
  • UAE residents and international travellers challenged to explore major attractions in Abu Dhabi in only two days
  • Airline to launch Instagram competition with 500 exciting Abu Dhabi prizes to be won
Etihad Airways has thrown down the gauntlet to the millions of guests who transit through its Abu Dhabi home, as well as the residents of the UAE, by challenging them to experience a host of ‘once in a lifetime’ activities throughout the emirate in just two days.

The ‘48 Hour Challenge’ is part of Etihad Airways’ wider stopover campaign promoting Abu Dhabi as a ‘holiday within a holiday’ for transit travellers and a ‘staycation’ option for UAE residents wanting a relaxing short-break. The city’s many highlights can now be enjoyed through a series of exciting stopover programmes.

To launch the campaign, Etihad Airways recently challenged Ricky Wilson, singer-songwriter, TV personality and frontman of British indie rock band Kaiser Chiefs, to spend 48 hours exploring the best Abu Dhabi has to offer. The video of his attempt is part of a global online promotional campaign and captures the excitement of the challenge visually to share with consumers on social media and across the airline’s communications channels.

“For me a stopover meant sitting in the airport, or visiting duty free, but this is not what a stopover should be,” commented the singer. “It should be flying falcons across the desert, kayaking, visiting water parks….imbibing the culture of the place. Abu Dhabi has taught me that stopovers can be as relaxing as they are exhilarating. There is something incredibly refreshing about pushing yourself, getting out of your comfort zone and fully immersing yourself in a new city. I will never stay in the airport again during a stopover.

“It is an incredible place, with warm, generous and extremely hospitable people. The city perfectly combines a relaxing and chilled out vibe with excitement and adventure. It is a beautiful city with endless things to do in a short space of time.”

Peter Baumgartner, Etihad Airways’ Chief Executive Officer, said: “The launch of Etihad Airways’ comprehensive stopover programme reinforces what we who live in this wonderful city have known for so long – that Abu Dhabi is a cosmopolitan, dynamic and thrilling destination packed with opportunities for all visitors, whether they are looking for adventure, culture, or a relaxing beach break.

Business magnet Aliko Dangote is currently the owner of the largest crane in Africa after buying it from China’s leading construction company, XCMG Construction Machinery Co Ltd.

The largest crane in Africa weighs about 1250 tons and was assembled in Nigeria. Assistant President and General Manager, Hanson Liu equally added that XCMG sold about 5000 units of various kinds of products to customers in Africa last year 2016.

He also added that as a market they are closely monitoring Africa on account of the continent holding promise as far as opportunities are concerned. However, they are presently deterred because of issues such as financial restrictions in some of the countries as well as insecurity.

Due to the high technology employed by the company, robots are a part of the manufacture process, raising questions as to whether or not this would increase unemployment in the world’s most populated country.

CURRENT ACCOUNT DEFICIT NARROWS SHARPLY

The current account balance narrowed by nearly a half to a deficit of 1,811.6 million US dollars in the year ending February 2017 on account of a 15 per cent decline in imports of goods and services combined with increase in exports.

According to the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) monthly economic review for March shows that the annual export value of goods and services amounted to 9,174.4 million US dollars compared with 8,978.1 million US dollars last year. The value of traditional exports rose by 17.8 per cent to 896.7 million US dollars in the year ending February 2017 from February 2016. Much of the improvement came from export of cashew nuts. Earnings from the other main traditional export crop including coffee, sisal, tea and cloves that declined at varying degrees.

TWO MILLION HOUSES NEEDED IN KENYA TO TAME SLUM EXPLOSION

The World Bank has said that Kenya needs to build two million affordable city homes to meet its housing deficit. The World Bank also said this will help stem slum explosion.

WB noted that investment in housing would also create jobs, improve economic growth and strengthen the east African country’s financial sector.

in its latest report the World Bank observes that a lot of Kenyans are unnecessarily living in slum dwellings due to limited supply coupled with lack of affordability.

The World Bank cautions that the problem will only become worse over the next decades unless a serious focus on housing and the finance of housing for the average Kenyan is taken.

While only one in three of Kenya’s 44 million people live in cities, its population growth is largely urban. The report also show that most Kenyans will live in cities by 2033.

IMF STAFF COMPLETE VISIT TO TANZANIA

  • Implementation of the Policy Support Instrument program continues to be broadly satisfactory
  • GDP growth has been robust, with some fluctuations driven mostly by variations in the stance of macroeconomic policies
  • Food price increases drove 12-month inflation to 6.4 percent in March 2017, but its impact is expected to subside
A team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Mauricio Villafuerte, visited Tanzania from April 3-13, 2017 and held discussions with the authorities on the sixth review under the Policy Support Instrument (PSI) program that was approved on July 16, 2014.
At the end of the visit, Mr. Villafuerte issued the following statement:
“Economic growth, estimated at about 7 percent, remained strong in 2016. More recently though, the economy has hit a soft patch in the context of slow budget implementation, a slowdown in monetary aggregates and credit to the private sector, and the impact of a drought. These factors are expected to ease in the second half of the year and the growth momentum to strengthen.

AfDB REVEALS $12 BILLION POWER PROGRAMME FOR AFRICA

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has revealed its new power programme for Africa, under which it will invest $12bn in the next five years.

These finances will support its New Deal on Energy for Africa, which plans to achieve global access to electricity in Africa by 2025. The idea was born out of the Energy Week conference held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire at the end of March, which brought shareholders together to talk about methods of improving energy access.

Until quite recently, the AfDB and other organizations considered off-grid power provision as a temporary solution measure, intended to provide electricity to people until their homes were linked to the grid.

However, the universal boom in renewable energy technologies and the mounting appeal of energy self sufficiency in the West has altered the way the concept is seen. The process is prone to pick up the pace when battery storage becomes cheaper and more competent.

"Emirates can confirm that we will be reducing flights to five of the 12 U.S. cities we currently serve," said a spokesman for the Dubai-based airline.

Daily flights from Dubai to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando will be cut to five a week. Flights to Seattle, Boston and Los Angeles will now be once a day, instead of twice.

Emirates and the other Gulf carriers, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways, have been in the firing line of new U.S. policies on immigration and security.

Trump signed a revised executive order last month banning citizens of six Muslim-majority countries from entry. It was struck down by the courts, but the U.S. administration said it will appeal the decision.

THE Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) has launched a robust strategy to market the local tourism sector in Israel, expressing confidence that it has enough funds to implement the initiative.

The TTB Chairman, Judge (rtd) Thomas Mihayo, said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that in implementing the new strategy, TTB had invited a team of journalists, officials from Israel’s Safari Company and an entertainment celebrity for a three day-tour of various tourist attractions so that they can be ambassadors of the Tanzanian tourism industry when they go back to their country.
“A team of ten people from Israel arrived in the country today (yesterday) morning aboard a direct private aircraft and already, our visitors are in Kigoma to visit the Gombe National Park which is popular in preserving Chimpanzee,’’ he said.
According to him, the visitors are expected to end their tour tomorrow and the government did not provide any funding for their visit. Their visit comes barely a week after former Israeli Prime Minister, Mr Ehud Barak, praised the government for the way it preserves the country’s tourist attractions.
Mr Barak, who led a group of over hundred Israeli tourists including his family, arrived in the country early last week for a tourism mission. During his tour, Mr Barak and his team visited Ngorongoro and Serengeti National Parks which are in the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.
According to Tanzania National Parks (Tanapa) Communications Manager, Mr Pascal Shelutete, the former Israeli Premier made a stopover at Olduvai Gorge on his way to Serengeti National Park, where he was met by Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Engineer Ramo Makani.

VODACOM TANZANIA IPO TENURE PUSHED BACK

Capital Markets and Securities Authority (CMSA) has extended Vodacom’s 476bn/- initial public offers by three more weeks to May 11.

CMSA extension based on Vodacom plea that should the IPO ended yesterday as planned many retail and institution investors will be left out. CMSA Principal Public Relations Officer Mr Charles Shirima told 'Daily News' yesterday the go ahead was given based on amount and size of the IPO before the public. “Vodacom said many will be left out if the deadline preceded as intended on April 19.

Some groups, like MPs also asked for the extension,” Mr Shirima said.

Mr Shirima did not rule the possibility of liquidity tightness that the economy currently experienced but said stock brokers are in better position to verify that. The new listing date on Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) is now pegged on June 6. The leading telecom plans to raise 476bn/- in a share sale at 850/- each out of 560 million shares.

Apart from 11 brokers, the IPO is also supported by several banks including NBC—the receiving bank, CRDB, NMB, Bank M, and Equity Bank. The Orbit Securities Director General, Simon Juventus said the extension is set to benefit mainly retail investors as many had family commitment and Easter holiday cut down the number of IPO days.

“The demand for extension was lingering on the air as many tend to come at the deadline…especially retail investors,” Mr Juventus said. Orbit is the IPO sponsoring broker. He added: “We have many buyers today in our offices unlike any other days.
