KENYA FAILS APRIL AUDIT ON DIRECT FLIGHTS TO THE UNITED STATES

Kenyans will wait longer for direct flights to the United States after American aviation authorities said they were still not satisfied with conditions at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.

The Federal Aviation Authority will perform another audit of JKIA in October after its last review fell below the US regulator’s minimum threshold.

“During the last audit in April we came very close to the 80 per cent mark (required for direct flights to begin). We expect to meet all requirements after the final audit in October,” Samuel Poghisio, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) board chairman, said Tuesday.

The International Civil Aviation Organisation audit gave Kenya a score of 78.42 per cent, up from 66 per cent in 2013, he added. ICAO does not reveal details of its scores and audit recommendations. It is up to each member country to decide what it wishes to declare.

Kenya has been implementing a raft of recommendations by the US government to enhance security, among them separation of passenger arrival and departure terminals, clearing the flight path and fencing off the airport.

KENYA AIRWAYS EXPERIENCES ECONOMIC TURBULENCE

Kenya Airways (KQ) is 70 billion Kenyan shillings in debt this year.

Mbuvi Ngunze, chief executive of the airline told CNBC Africa that his main priority when he took over was to restructure the airline’s debt especially for the short term which he described as “slightly sticky”.

“We are in the final stages of looking for a bridging loan to manage the short term debt because we could anticipate the tight liquidity into the new part of the year and also looking for some working capital,” he said.

According to Ngunze, they have invested significantly in the last two to three years which has added to their capacity for the long term plan, however in that vision the primary market has been quite unstable.

SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS TO BEGIN NONSTOP ACCRA-WASHINGTON FLIGHTS IN AUGUST 2015

South African Airways (SAA) has added nonstop flights between the Kotoka International Airport and the Dules International Airport in Washington D.C. to its schedules, set to begin in August, 2015.

According to Africa’s leading carrier, the new route is part of a long-term turnaround strategy to boost the growth of its operations on the continent.

From August 2, the only four-star rated carrier in Africa will fly four times a week – Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday – to Washington DC on its A340-600s aircraft.

“SAA’s decision to route some of its North American-bound flights to Ghana, is based on sound business principles as there is considerable demand for passengers to fly from Ghana to the US”, said Kendy Phohleli, SAA Executive Africa Hub Projects, at a press briefing in Accra.

Tanzania’s government has agreed to buy back a 35 per cent stake in a state-run telecoms company from the local subsidiary of India’s top mobile carrier Bharti Airtel for TShs14.6 billion ($7.07 million), a senior official said.

The nation says it wants to regain 100 per cent ownership of the Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL) to recapitalise the cash-strapped firm, which provides mobile voice, data and fixed-line services.

“Legal procedures are now being finalised for the government to buy back Airtel’s shares in TTCL and regain sole ownership of the company,” January Makamba, deputy minister for communication, science and technology, told parliament late on Tuesday.

“The Tanzanian government has decided to regain 100 per cent ownership of TTCL in order to rescue the company.”

The Tanzanian government has been in talks with Bharti Airtel over the deal for the past five years but failed to reach agreement on the price until the recent breakthrough.

Only the elimination of this problem will allow to meet the challenge of quality telecommunication services”, explained Eugene Juwah, the vice president of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

IMF HIGHLIGHTS DANGERS OF DOLLARISATION IN NIGERIA, OTHERS

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has pointed out that dollarisation, if left unchecked will remain an important challenge to policymakers in Nigeria and other African countries.

According to the multilateral agency, dollarisation constrains the capacity of monetary authorities to act as a lender of last resort, hampers banks’ liquidity management and weakens the stability of the financial sector. The Fund also noted that dollarisation may amplify the impact of exchange rate movements on banks’ balance sheets, thereby increasing the risk of contractionary effects and bank failures.

The IMF stated this in its 75-page report titled: “Dollarisation in Sub-Saharan Africa: Experience and Lessons.”

The Department of Home Affairs rolled out a new policy that minors travelling to and from South Africa will require an unabridged birth certificate (UBC).

This policy has been met with much contempt from travel associations as they said this policy is creating an unnecessary barrier to South Africa as a holiday destination.

David Frost, CEO of Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA) said, “This is the biggest challenge our industry has ever faced… we are facing dire threats.”

According to Frost, in the last eight months of 2014, South Africa lost 66,000 foreign tourists due to changes in the immigration regulations. This has resulted in 2.6 billion rand loss for the sector.

Kenya shook off security threats perpetuated by the Al-Shabaab terror group to attract Sh115 billion in foreign direct investments in 2014, more than double what the country got the previous year.

The amount is, however, still well short of the highs of 2008/2009 (Sh163 billion) before a global economic crisis saw FDI figures slide back below Sh100 billion.Investment flows to the country more than doubled last year on the back of increased investor preference in Kenya as a regional business hub, defying growing security threats that have crippled the tourism sector.

AfDB FUNDS USD 70.5 MILLION FOR TANZANIA'S POWER SECTOR REFORM AND GOVERNANCE SUPPORT PROGRAMME

Power sector reform and a governance support programme are central to the African Development’s actions to accompany Tanzania’s economic growth.

It is in line with this, that the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance of the United Republic of Tanzania, Servacius Likwelile and the African Development Bank’s Vice-President, in charge of Agriculture, Water, Human Development, Governance and Natural Resources, Aly Abou-Sabaa signed a USD 70.5 million loan accord on May 27 in Abidjan.

The fund will finance the Power Sector Reform and Governance Support Programme (PSRGSP) in the country. It will boost the Government’s efforts to implement energy-sector and related reforms, particularly, strengthening the institutional framework and operational efficiency of the power sector; enhancing competition and private sector participation in the power sector; and improving governance.

Oil tankers have become super expensive — a sign drillers are flooding the market once more, according to a report Wednesday by Bloomberg's Naomi Christie and Bill Lehane.

The daily rate for oil supertankers is at its highest level for this time of year since 2008, Bloomberg reported.

Benchmark charter rates surged 57% in the two weeks leading up to last Wednesday because of a sudden rise in demand.

According to Bloomberg, the surge in the cost of oil supertankers is sending a bearish signal to the oil market.

The 12-member oil cartel OPEC is determined to maintain its share of the oil market and is flooding the market to keep up with the supply glut elsewhere.

Loss-making Malaysia Airlines is set to undergo a complete overhaul as it is restructured into a new company, with a rebranding that will be unveiled next week and changes planned to its fleet and network strategies.

Christoph Mueller, who joined from Irish national carrier Aer Lingus, said in his first ever interview since taking over as chief executive on May 1 that the new company will be like a "start-up".

A new name and livery are on the cards for Malaysia Airlines (MAS), sources told Reuters.

"I'm hired to run the new company entirely on commercial terms and there's very little margin for error," Mueller told Reuters at the downtown Kuala Lumpur office of Malaysian state investor Khazanah, which took MAS private late last year as part of a 6 billion ringgit ($1.66 billion) restructuring.

MTN WARNS OVER NIGERIA FUEL CRISIS

LAGOS — Nigeria’s biggest mobile phone operator MTN has warned that its network faces shutdown due to fuel shortages that have crippled the nation.

The company, the biggest subsidiary of the South Africa-based MTN Group, said it needed a "significant quantity of diesel in the very near future to prevent a shutdown of services across Nigeria".

"If diesel supplies are not received within the next 24 hours the network will be seriously degraded and customers will feel the impact," it added on its Twitter account @MTNNG on Saturday evening.

Nigeria — Africa’s biggest economy and most populous nation — has been increasingly hit by fuel shortages in recent weeks because of a long-running row over controversial subsidy payments.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chinese authorities have taken government officials and members of their families on tours of prisons as a "warning" against corruption, the official China Daily newspaper reported on Monday, citing the country's top disciplinary body.

In China's eastern Hubei province, 70 Communist Party leaders, senior officials and their spouses "visited ex-officials in the city prison and spent a day in jail as an educational warning", the newspaper said.

President Xi Jinping has made weeding out corruption a top priority since coming to power more than two years ago, investigating and arresting senior government officials, military chiefs and business leaders.

The prison tours, which included visiting former colleagues and bosses imprisoned for bribery and abuse of power, were a blunt reminder from Beijing against corruption. The China Daily said photos of interrogations were hanging on prison walls for visitors to see.
