TANZANIA SETS UP ARBITRATION CENTRE TO BOOST INVESTMENT APPEAL

Tanzania is in the final stages of setting up an International Arbitration Centre that aims to hasten settlement of commercial disputes and promote foreign investments.

The Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF) executive secretary, Godfrey Simbeye, said all technicalities have been completed and they were awaiting to launch the centre in July this year to start its operations.

"Our country has contracted major foreign investments and usually such investments encounter disputes which if taken to court take up to 10 years to reach a verdict thereby discouraging investors from investing in our country and the region as a whole," he said.

AMI HOSPITAL (TRAUMA CENTRE) FACES IMMINENT CLOSURE

AMI Hospital or Trauma Centre at Msasani in Dar es Salaam is facing imminent closure after it failed to comply with Court of Appeal order that wanted it to deposit in court 1,514,000 US dollars plus a monthly rent to a tune of 64,000 US dollars per month, following a tenancy agreement dispute.

A panel of three Court of Appeal judges, Justices Mbarouk Mbarouk, Salum Massati and Katherine Oriyo, ordered African Medical Investments (T) Ltd (AMI) to make the deposits a month after the ruling which was issued on 12 February 2015, an order that has not been honoured.

The court made their ruling in a civil application No. 185 of 2014 filed by AMI in protest against execution of a ruling on main commercial suit No.

104 of 2013 that it lost to its landlord (local businessman Navtej Singh Bains) in respect of a building where the company is conducting its business.

AMI Hospital had lost the case filed by the landlord for failure to pay rent for the past 26 months in a legal battle at the Tanzania Commercial Court in November 2014 and were issued with a Notice for Eviction by the landlord.

DAR ES SALAAM STOCK EXCHANGE, NATIONAL MICROFINANCE BANK LAUNCH ANNUAL TSH2 MILLION STUDENT INVESTMENT CHALLENGE

Students from higher learning institutions have the next three months to compete and win 2m/- courtesy of NMB Bank and Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE).

In a statement, DSE said the competition was launched in Dar es Salaam on Saturday and will last 90 days with three top winners sharing a cash prize of 2m/- and internships.

This is the second time in a row that NMB supports the project. “The competition will be open to all students of higher learning institutions who are to get a virtual capital of 1m/- and invest it through buying and selling financial products, winners will be determined by their sound investment, portfolio value and their contribution in the discussion forum,” the statement added.

FASTJET LINKS ENTEBBE TO KILIMANJARO

While Kenya is still dilly dallying with the issue of allowing Tanzania’s cheapest airline to fly to Nairobi, Fastjet has just announced its new route linking Kilimanjaro International Airport to Uganda’s Entebbe terminal.

The airline has also been generous enough in extending its flights to Mwanza.

Announcing the new schedule in Arusha at the weekend, the Fastjet Manager in charge of the East African Region, Mr Jimmy Kibati, said that direct flights between KIA and Entebbe were crucial.

“And even then, African states either end up losing badly or get incited into wars and conflicts before being declared failed states by the same Western friends turned foes, the Zimbabwean leader observed.

SUPER TRANSIT RAILWAY LINE WORK DUE IN JUNE 2015

Construction of the 2,561-kilometre standard gauge railway that will ease transportation of goods from Dar es Salaam port to Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is scheduled to start on June 30, this year. The 14 trillion/- Central Corridor project will be accomplished within five years.

This revelation comes nearly three days after six heads of East and Central African countries met in Dar es Salaam to discuss how to fast-track implementation of the Central Corridor Projects and enhancement of investment in the sector.

Addressing reporters in Dar es Salaam, Transport Minister Samuel Sitta said that President Jakaya Kikwete will inaugurate the project. “This railway line will run from Mpiji in Dar es Salaam to Kigoma through Tabora, Mwanza, Isaka to Rusumo, Kaliua-Mpanda-Karema and Uvinza-Musongati in Burundi,” he said.

The Minister pointed out that Reli Assets Holding Company (RAHCO) has contracted Rothschild, one of the Word’s largest financial advisory groups based in the US, to mobilise resources for the project.

Moreover, Mr Sitta noted that implementation of other two railway projects will also have their foundation stones laid this year.

(Reuters) - Top European and U.S. banks axed 59,000 jobs last year as they restructured and cut costs, with headcount expected to shrink further in Europe as bosses strive to improve profitability that has been hit hard by tougher regulation.

Lenders have also sold or shut businesses to narrow their focus to avoid falling foul of regulators concerned that some have become too big and complex.

Analysts said that European banks, especially those in the euro zone, are likely to wield the knife again because they remain the most unprofitable in the world.

"The screws will stay tight on headcount," said Aymen Saleh, managing director at Boston Consulting Group in London.

DHL EXPECTATIONS FOR AFRICA: 2015 OUTLOOK

In line with Sub-Saharan Africa’s (SSA) projected economic growth of 4.9%1 this year, which is double the projection for advanced economies (2.4%1), DHL SSA expects 2015 to be a year of growth for the logistics industry on the African continent, largely driven by increased consumer demand and the rapidly developing e-commerce industry.

This is according to Charles Brewer, Managing Director of DHL Express SSA, who was commenting against the backdrop of Deutsche Post DHL Group’s full year results released in March. DPDHL Group ended 2014 with revenues of EUR 56.6 billion, up 3.1% compared to 2013. He says that the company’s increased focus on e-commerce and emerging markets, including Africa, has led the group to achieve growth in both volume and revenue in 2014.

A new report by yStats.com2 revealed that despite Africa lagging behind other regions when it comes to the development of online infrastructure, business-to-consumer (B2C) sales will grow to double-digit numbers in EUR billions in the next three years.

Brewer says that as such, a key focus for DHL Express Sub Saharan Africa in 2015 is to further strengthen connectivity, both within the continent and globally. He says that this will be crucial to meeting the growing e-commerce market on the continent, and assist in driving further growth.

KENYA: LOCAL BANKS EXPERIENCING A CHALLENGE FUNDING CONSTRUCTION OF 10,000 KM OF ROADS IN ANNUITY PROGRAM

Local banks are reporting challenge in funding construction of 10,000km of roads in a roads annuity program organized by the government of Kenya. The road construction project, which was to see roads across the country tarmacked in a period of five years have and perceived to be one of the ambitious infrastructural plans to be witnessed since independence, is said to be discouraging participation of banks due to the complicated financing model. The roads annuity financing model, according to the banks could make them give non-performing loans according to industry sources.

The roads annuity concessions financing model, largely borrowed from India, is a system where contractors will undertake construction of roads and then be paid after assessment of sections by the government. They will have responsibility to design, build and maintain roads for up to eight years Sourcing for loans from banks by the contractors is guaranteed by the treasury.

KENYA TO SEEK US$1.3 BILLION FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO UPGRADE 2 HIGHWAYS

Kenya is in the plans of upgrading the Mombasa-Nairobi (A109) and Nairobi-Nakuru (A104) highway sections to a dual-carriage road, but is planning to market the project to raise the US$ 1.3bn needed for the projects.

Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet secretary Michael Kamau confirmed the reports and said that the Kenyan government will place their focus on seeking funds for the road construction projects from foreign financiers and commercial banks.

Mr. Kamau pointed out that the ministry is determined to fulfill the goal of the dual-carriage highways through a public private partnership (PPP) model.

“The government has conducted benchmarking in other countries and found that the public private partnership (PPP) model is the best option to fund these projects,” he further said.

WORLD BANK TO PROVIDE US$60M FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN TANZANIA

World Bank has last month approved US$60m to fund affordable housing in Tanzania. The move will be crucial as the country is experiencing rapid urbanization in the recent past according to Philippe Dongier, World Bank Country Director for Tanzania, Burundi and Uganda.

The financing will go towards mortgage market to help ordinary families with house building initiatives. The director said that the loan will go a long way in expanding the construction industry in the country, as well as supporting urban residents facing problems with housing credit.

TANZANIA TOURISM BEATS GOLD IN FOREIGN EXCHANGE EARNING

Boasting $2.05 billion earning in the 12 months ending January, up from $1.89 billion by end of January 2014, tourism has overtaken gold as Tanzania’s leading foreign exchange earner despite threats from the Ebola disease.

Bank of Tanzania’s February Monthly Economic Review indicates that gold exports value plunged from $1.64 billion to $1.31 billion in the period under review, as both export volume and price in the world market dropped. About one million tourists visited the country during the period.

TULLOW OIL UGANDA LAYS OFF 120 WORKERS

At least 120 people in Uganda are the latest casualties of low global oil prices that have forced Tullow Uganda to downsize. In a rather drastic move, the company has decided to shrink employees by at least 88 per cent, majority of whom are Ugandans.

Daily Monitor has learnt that on Tuesday March 24, at least 120 Tullow Uganda staff were made redundant by the company.

The laid-off employees have been promised a severance package and advance salary of up-to three months, depending on the number of years they worked.

The low oil prices plunged Tullow Oil Plc into its first loss in 15 years. As a result, the company announced it would cut costs in order to become leaner. Uganda is one of those earmarked for the staff downsizing.

Tullow declined the opportunity to comment on the Uganda lay-offs when contacted via phone calls, emails and text messages.

MIDDLE EAST CARRIERS PUSH KENYA AIRWAYS (KQ) INTO TURBULENT FUTURE

The Dubai-based carrier, flydubai said it would increase its flights in Africa to 78 per week.

The airline, which doubled its Africa routes last year, will have 12 touch points in East and North Africa. The latest destinations are Alexandria, Bujumbura, Juba and Zanzibar. This has seen its passenger numbers in Africa shoot up by 14 per cent.

Flydubai chairman His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum said the airline’s strategy this year is to increase flights, especially in the underserved routes in Africa.

Dubai’s Emirates has also brought the battle to the doorstep of the troubled Kenya Airways when it announced plans to connect more people with Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, by switching from the current Airbus A330-200 aircraft used in one of the two daily flights to a larger Boeing 777-300 ER starting May 1.

UMOJA wa Mataifa umesema kwamba utaendelea kuisaidia serikali ya Tanzania katika kutanzua changamoto za maendeleo zinazoikumba nchi hii.

Kauli hiyo imetolewa na Mratibu Mkazi wa Mashirika ya Umoja wa Mataifa na mwakilishi wa Shirika la Maendeleo la Umoja huo (UNDP), Alvaro Rodgriguez wakati wa uzinduzi wa Ripoti ya maendeleo ya Binadamu ya mwaka 2014 mwishoni mwa wiki.

BENKI YA NBC YATOA MSAADA WA MAFUTA, KOFIA, PIKIPIKI NA KOMPYUTA KWA MAALBINO

Mkuu Kitengo cha Wateja Binafsi wa Benki ya Taifa ya Biashara (NBC) Musa Jallow (wa tano kulia) akikabidhi msaada wa pikipiki kwa Mwenyekiti wa Chama cha Albino Tanzania Mkoa wa Pwani, Thomas Diwani Mponda katika hafla ambayo NBC pia ilikikabidhi msaada wa hundi ya shs milioni 3.2, kompyuta, kofia na mafuta maalumu ya ngozi vikiwa na lengo la kuwasaidia na matatizo yanayowakabili kutokana na hali hiyo inayotokana na kurithi vinasaba kutoka kwa wazazi. Hafla hiyo ilifanyika jijini Dar es Salaam mwishoni mwa wiki. Wengine ni baadhi ya maofisa wa NBC na kutoka chama cha albino.

Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania’s Finance Team members on Friday morning held a tree planting event which was officiated by the Mayor of Ilala District Hon. Jerry Silaa. The event was also attended by the Bank’s Audit Team members and other high ranking officials from the Ilala Municipal Office – Environment department. 

The team planted sixty trees along the Barack Obama road, one of the most busy roads in Dar es Salaam. Given its location near the public beach, the area is also frequented by many people during weekends. The trees will, therefore, not only help in conserving the environment, but will also be a great source of shade for many people who frequent the area.

Hon. Silaa commended the Bank for its ongoing efforts to conserve the environment. In addition to applauding the tree planting initiative, he also commended the Bank’s Digitization move, citing the use of eStatements and Online Banking as a great example of the Bank’s contribution to Environmental conservation.

On her part, the Bank’s Head of Finance, Ruth Zaipuna, used the opportunity as a platform to reiterate the Bank’s support towards conserving the environment, covering the Bank’s various initiatives, and reminded participants on the various individual actions towards environmental conservation, such as not leaving tap water running and switching off their PCs at close of day, which collectively make a big contribution towards conserving the environment.
